C.W. AYON - Music Of The Delta Played From The Desert

He's got a great new album out called Ain't No Use In Moving. Ayon is a fine songwriter with a soulful voice that recalls the Black Crowes Chris Robinson, and a slide style that'd make any North Mississippi Mama proud. All the songs on the album are original except for a cool take on Junior Kimbrough's Feel So Bad.
He has a groove on bass drum and foot-operated snare so deep that it almost falls out of the pocket, yet at times is akin to a heartbeat. He doesn't let the fact that he's a one-man band particularly show or get in the way, and he shouldn't. He runs a great balance of solid, muscular riffs with a sexy, vigorous, and dextrous delivery.
Somebody needs to pony up and get this kid a smart, sympathetic, recording engineer for his next album and let him run bad and nationwide. Dude's capable. Let's move.

Comprised of ten tracks, including live recordings from their annual Junior Kimbrough Birthday Party, and four tracks with Mississippi's legendary Bill Abel, who has played guitar for Paul Wine Jones, Big George Brock, T-Model Ford, and others.
This tough lil' set will be available stateside at OGM gigs or you can give Charlie a holler when they get back home. You can also send yr digits to OZ and get the good folks at Stobie Sound to send you a copy.

Forty Nickles For A Bag Of Chips is a ten song tribute to the men who inspired C.R. Humphrey to play guitar in the first place. Men like Belton Sutherland, Jack Owens, Paul "Wine" Jones, R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and others. Each song, with the exception of a cover of Closer Walk With Thee, is original and all but two of the songs are first-takes.

C.R. reminded me that on R.L. Burnside's album Ass Pocket Of Whiskey
, Jon Spencer (of The Blues Explosion
) is heard asking R.L. for "40 Nickles for a bag of chips". Geez, the things I forget. I used to know that album sideways. I done got olde, people. Time to bust it back out!
40 Nickles was recorded at Jimbo Mathus' Delta Recording Services in Como, Mississippi in one-hour and fifty-minutes ( plus a couple breaks ). C.R. and Kinney Kimbrough recorded all the songs while Jimbo was out gettin' beer and gas, which is why Mathus is credited in the liner notes as "Spiritual Advisor and Sketch Artist" rather than producer. Well-deserved monickers, none the less, i'd reckon.

Once again, this album is a two-man operation: C.R. Humphrey, of course, on guitar with the legendary Kinney Kimbrough ( son of the late, great Junior Kimbrough ) on drums. And once again, you don't even miss the vocals. The music is just that good. C. R. was between drummers when the time came to record and since he and Kinney had played together some at C.R.'s annual Junior Kimbrough's birthday bash it seemed a natural fit to enlist him to fill the spot. Kinney hadn't heard any of the songs prior to recording but you'd sure as hell never know it. As C.R. says, "The man is an absolute pro." and it shows on this album. Humphrey himself is no slouch. His guitar style is full and intricate, but he leaves space to allow the songs to breath, slink and groove. He studied the masters but did not let that get in his way. I have no doubt he would make his heroes proud.
40 Nickels For A Bag Of Chips is another delicious collection of songs done the way only Old Gray Mule can do 'em. It's like Chris Johnson-style BBQ for your ears. Gotta have it!

"Either you find an old tube amp in the garbage or you drive halfway across the country to look a turtle in his eye. I shook Charley’s hand at 11:00 am and at 5 o’clock he left with his record, mixed and finished. Every track was one take flawless. The heartbeat of the hills was steady beneath the heels and wrists of a giant, Kinney Kimbrough, and sounds clapped off the walls like quick flashes of lightning or knives being flung at your ears.

Ladies and Gentlemen we have a winner.
Old Gray Mule hail from Lockhart Texas ( home of the Caldwell County Courthouse ) which lies just due south of Austin and to the right of San Marcos Texas zip code 78666. Scott H Biram Country. Old Gray Mule is made from scratch out of C.R. Humphrey on guitar/groove w/Joe Falco on drums/groove, one part shiny silver spoonful of Tejas-era ZZ Top, a fat t of stanky dope-era SRV ( 'tho no strats were used in this recording...thank gawd ), some Hooker boogie and a tight fistfull of R.L. Burnside-style grooves. You throw down some really fine Junior Kimbrough cum Mississippi Gabe Carter open deep reverb sugar rolled loose while rockin' it tighter than a dirty Left Lane Cruiser VS grrreasy Hillstomp midnite piney woodser. Brilliant stuff recorded totally live. Ten songs in two hours and forty-five minutes with no gawdamn effects or affects or any other BS to get in the way. Just delicious tight hard blue North Mississippi hillcountry grooves by way of Texas boogie. That's just about all you need ain't it? Y'all seen that pic on the inside of the 'Tops Tres Hombres album? They sound like that. Old Gray Mule kick it hard, let it hang, let it breath, and you just keep diggin' the potlatch. But wait...did I mention OGM is all instrumental? Except for one track which features Mississippi Gabe Carter. But hell, Old Gray Mule's sound is so taut, so arresting, it took three or four listens before it really dawned on me to think, wait a minute...what the? Cool! This is a fresh olde sound that I cannot wait to blast more of. The feel good hit of the the end of the summer. Get some!

"Here are 2 tunes recorded live on night 1 of our Junior Kimbrough birthday and CD release party. Both tunes will be on the next album "40 Nickels For A Bag Of Chips" which we ought to get around to recording sometime in October or November. Issaquena Stomp is a tune we improvised behind Pat "Rockadaddy" Murphy at Club 2000 during the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale. Club 2000 is on Issaquena Ave, and we played there for 4-5 hours opening for T Model. Put the Foot To Him is a song I wrote about a day before the Kimbrough's got to my house, so this recording is actually the second time we'd ever played it and the first time live. Kinney told me a story about a fight he had to break up at his Pop's juke joint and one of the punchlines of the story was him telling a gal wearing pointy shoes to put the foot to the guy who had been whoopin up on her who was now lying on the floor against the pool table. Hope you enjoy 'em."
