I've talked about the end of Pink Priest and it's pretty much here. There's been no new Priest music recorded in the past couple months. There's a small handful of recordings left, including a split cassette with A Grave With No Name and of course, the finale, the Swallow Your Dreams LP. These will be out in the next couple months...

This is basically a retrospective mixtape I put together to recount the 2 years I spent with the Pink Priest moniker. It's called Sweet Ground and is a collection of personal favorites from various releases, also including some unreleased bonuses. The material ranges from the early, unsavory distorted casio roots of the project onward to coldwave and death-rock obsession, to tense, melodic soundscape territory, and grimy, grey ambient noise fields. A bit of everything is touched upon in this collection.

Clan Destine Records recently dropped a hand cut 7" for the Malibu Wands project. This a special release for a handful of reasons... First off, yeah, it's a hand cut vinyl 7", meaning each copy was hand cut... Pretty fucking insane. Secondly, the a-side "Honeyhead," is a noisy, spiraling black cloud of tension, that was beautifully tempered by Frank Baugh, or you may know him better as Sparkling Wide Pressure. The track is a different state of affairs from the normal walls of fuzz Malibu Wands is surrounded by -- see the B-side. Also, this record only has a tiny run of 20 copies, so snag one while they last... You can get it from the Clan Destine Big Cartel.

Via Praire Fire Tapes: About a week after we released the Gremlynz/Ajilvsga split tape (PF 020), the Pink Priest (William Cody Watson) contacted us with plans for another release. This time he brought with him Horders, the musical project of Houston visual artist Give Up. Pink Priest offers up a rapturous side of dark creeping menacing psychedelic drones while Horders takes on a loner folk via black metal trip. It all makes up for an awesomely dark ambient release that won't disappoint.

Here is a track from the upcoming split cassette with A Grave With No Name, coming out on Sweat Lodge Guru in the coming months. It will probably be the last Pink Priest release before the Swallow Your Dreams LP comes out next year; which will be the last official Pink Priest release.

I'm extremely excited for this release, and it's been in the works forever... I really respect the music of A Grave With No Name, because I feel like it manages to channel many different elements, moods, themes, and emotional responses; without being hard to grasp. So many artists, myself included (and I don't remotely consider myself an artist, really) are hellbent on trying to make the most mind-numbing, bewildering, intricate, and avant-garde music and sound. Where A Grave With No Name succeeds, to me, is in attaining a true aesthetic, tone, and ambiance with the music, while maintaining a real accessibility. The music isn't hard to grasp, it's easy to latch onto it and let it carry you... I'm very into that element.

So I'm coming up off this Gremlynz release that I recorded at the beginning of this month. I'm hanging out, it's 7AM, highly early fuckin weirdo time for me. There's rain pounding down outside, and a calming, cool has set in. There's a fucked up, ominous, eerie ambiance that surrounds my hometown, which I've had to move back to recently -- unfortunately. I can't explain it. Maybe it's a vibe that everyone feels in their hometown, but I like to think that that's just this place. I like to link there truly is a reason for the freaky vibes, like maybe it was developed over an ancient burial ground or something that presents some vague sense of terror on some level.

Done a lot of walking around the past few days, and watching these rust colored leaves drop and tussle with the wind has been a delight, but that odd, creepy atmosphere won't leave. I'm totally ok with it. I actually embrace it. It's a part of my psyché, and without it, without that odd zone to crawl into and take in, I don't think releases like this would be possible. That feeling is sort of necessary, I feel.

So I've been working on a bunch of shit and I've been talking about it a bit here and there. I guess first and foremost I should talk about the Pink Priest LP dropping on La Station Radar in, most likely, March of next year. It's called Swallow Your Dreams and I recently finished it. It's my second 12" from La Station Radar, though it's not really much like the first one, Honeysuckle. It's way more, like, ambient, organic, blah blah blah. No individual tracks, just 2 side-long jammers. It's pretty much a new age vibe, which is what I really wanted to shoot for. I guess another big thing regarding this release is that it's the last Pink Priest release... Yeah, Pink Priest is over in 2011. So, I feel like this is the perfect way to say goodbye to the project. There's a lot of reasons why I'm ending the project... Mostly, and putting it as simply as I can, is that I feel like over the course of the project it has skewed into realms I never really intended for it to drift into. No big deal... It's just something I'd rather put in the trophy case than continue hammering away at. There's still a few more Pink Priest releases lined up for 2010, and I'll get to them... I feel like with Swallow Your Dreams I took things, elements from the past Pink Priest releases and built upon the aesthetics I enjoyed, while working with newer elements I wanted to get at. I'm happy with the outcome.

Finishing out the year will be the last few Pink Priest releases... First up, there's the And I Watched The Ivy Cover Your House c30 for Peasant Magik. This is a tape I've been sitting on pins and needles, waiting for it to drop. It's very personal and I'm excited to see it released. It's basically "out," but not quite available from the label yet. It should be in distros very soon, and then will be sold through PM at some point in the future.

Then there's 3 splits... The first is a split cassingle with my soulmate Drew Hill for my home label Bathetic. After that we have the split c20 with Horders for Prairie Fire. I've been trying to work out some collaborative project with artist Give Up for a bit now, and this is the first part of that project. We'll be doing a literal collaboration called Buzzards in the not-too-distant future. Last is a split c20 with A Grave With No Name that has been in the works for close to a year, maybe?? Not sure exactly, but it's been a while... We're finishing up some label details and this will drop before 2010 dies out. Very stoked on it...

Of course, as I'm ending Pink Priest, I've begun working a lot more with the Gremlynz and Malibu Wands projects. There is a slew of new releases coming soon from both. I recently dropped the Dig A Ditch, Dig It Deep download from Malibu Wands and I'm looking to most likely do the same thing with the White Rot / Lord Loves release from Gremlynz, very soon.

On the immediate horizon is a 32 minute cassette from Gremlynz entitled Crystal Hexes. It's a bit cleaner than previous Gremlynz material, and I've described it as; if previous Gremlynz sound was "being dropped into 10,000 gallons of water," Crystal Hexes is more like "getting caught in a heavy downpour while walking down the street." It's a different vibe, pulling a bit from Pink Priest's more subdued crystalline, ambient moments. It was literally recorded in a vague attempt to help my girlfriend sleep better at night. This tape will mark my return to the Family Time label, which I'm very stoked about.

Malibu Wands also has some releases dropping very soon. In the next couple months, the Cult / Hive / Drug / Worship c80 will be dropping via Lee Noble's No Kings label, which also recently dropped the Gremlynz tape, Arkansas Vampire Eater. That label is killer and it's nice to be working with Lee again. This tape will also feature artwork courtesy of Give Up, which I'm really pleased with.

Then, after that, sometime very soon, there will be an extremely limited edition Malibu Wands lathe cut 7" from Clan Destine. We're working this all out and the process is beginning as we speak. This is a very special project for a lot of reasons. The a-side track on this also features some audio manipulation by the mighty Frank Baugh, aka the killer Sparkling Wide Pressure. I'm way excited for this to see the light of day.

After that, who knows? There's more Gremlynz projects in the works, and Jon and I have recently started recording new Wild Safari material. There's also some other collaborations in the talking stage, so we'll see how those band out. Also, Bathetic has some amazing releases lined up for 2011. So, the future is looking very bright.

Regarding the end of Pink Priest, I'm sure I'll make more of it and explain it better in the future. I couldn't be happier with the places the project has taken me and the exposure I've been gifted... It's been an extreme pleasure to meet and work with as many amazing people as I have through that project, and I hope the process continues into the future with new projects. Things aren't exactly flipping upside down, there's just a bit of a shift occuring. Blah blah blah. Who cares?

Also, finally... This Friday, I will be dropping a digital split between both Gremlynz & Malibu Wands, in celebration for Halloween... So check around for that... Thanks everyone.

SWALLOW YOUR DREAMS

I finally started working on the the follow up LP to HONEYSUCKLE for La Station Radar. I've already talked about it briefly on this blog, but it feels good to actually get some work done and I wanted to bring it up again.

This is a jam pretty far removed from HONEYSUCKLE. It's not a gathering of disjointed tracks, this will be an LP with, essentially, 2 side-long tracks. There's really nothing noisy or abrasive about this record, that's a decision I made a while back. I wanted to shift the direction of Pink Priest into a cleaner, more lush soundscape environment with less fuzz and muck (that's now reserved for Malibu Wands).

This record is basically stretched and processed synth improvisation, leading up to what I hope is something of a cinematic zone, less "taking you on a journey" more "sticking you in the middle of a realm" type of vibe. Definitely this is influenced by the likes of Edgar Froese & Tangerine Dream, Enno Velthuys, Brian Eno & Harold Budd, Don Slepian, Michel Genest, as well as people like Emeralds, Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Changeling, and Belong. These aren't exactly new influences, but I feel like I'm finally, more clearly defining this sound I've set out for. I think the release of the AND I SAW THE IVY COVER YOUR HOUSE cassette, and past works such as SOME NIGHTS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS are also something of the right direction.

This mindset has also bled into other projects, like the Malibu Wands track "Hive," off an upcoming release (read below) basically sounds something like a portion of this SWALLOW YOUR DREAMS material, only pulled from about 8 feet of tar, acid, and muck. I think it's interesting to see how my mindset and how these different audio influences and inspiration come out in various forms through various projects.

Also, SWALLOW YOUR DREAMS will be probably be the last Pink Priest release for a while, aside from a few tape projects that are already in the works. That's not to say I'm going to stop doing it, of course... I'm just finding myself working more with Malibu Wands and even Gremlynz at this point, as well as finally getting into more collaborative efforts. I'm sure more Pink Priest tapes will inevitably drop in 2011...maybe.

Basically, that's all I have to really say. Hopefully work will continue well for this new record and I'll be able to showcase new music soon.

super short teaser track from upcoming MALIBU WANDS project C/H/D/W, an upcoming cassette release, combining synth stretching, static & tape manipulation, voice dragging & deconstruction, and plenty of reverb + slightly tamed distortion. a psychedelic (noise) headtrip into weird zones. MALIBU WANDS is taking steps further into psych territory, distancing itself from the super-harsh arena. things are still dense, but less wretched feedback, more halls of fog.

the vibe of this release sort of draws from a lot of different areas of sound I've fucked around with before. there's definitely some elements of the earlier, noisier Pink Priest moments, hinted at on releases like WESTERN FUTURES and tapes like INFANT TAPE & even EAST CAMDEN, but there's an influence coming from the subterranean droning of Gremlynz and the tape manipulation of Virgin Spirit, while maintaining the dense, tarry atmosphere that is expected from Malibu Wands.

I'm not sure how to classify this, as it's taking plenty of cues from noise, drone, and dark ambient. it's definitely something of a new direction for Malibu Wands. the harsh, grating feedback swells and bottomed out, ultra distorted blow outs have tamed. I can't exactly explain why, it's just a natural progression. in my own opinion, Malibu Wands has been a project that has been evolving since it started. it doesn't move and shift in the way Pink Priest does, revolving and shifting through genres, mixing and matching and using many eclectic, disparate influences. I feel like the progression of M. Wands has been very fluid, moving with my own psyché. Whatever...

this sample is a 2-minute idea, however the entire release will be 80+ minutes of cavernous sound.

& here I've turned what would've been a 60-minute cassette release into a free digital download. why? because I'm tired of sitting on it. it's definitely not the easiest listen. the first track on the a-side is like, basically, a crash course in repetition for like 15 fucking minutes. the b-side ends the same way.

this release is Malibu Wands at its most drool-inducing. this wasn't shaped and shit out for the same reasons as CRAFTING or RAW DAGGER. this is catatonia, confusion, and nihilism to the nth degree. This is to nod off too, in the worst way imaginable.

Sorry for the lack of posts here as of late... I've been focused mostly on my new blog at Impose, Never Waking Up, so I've neglected my other blogs a bit; something of a bummer. I'm looking back on this blog now, for a second, to get a little bit personal...

It's just mind-boggling to me how things have worked out. I came to the realization while working up an article on Sorority Row -- a collaborative project between Jeans Wilder and myself -- that Pink Priest has been a project in the works for almost 2 years now. That's pretty much destroying my mind right now. It's not exactly that shocking, but well, fuck it, I guess it is.

I can't believe everything that's happened. I remember when I first started this project, all I wanted was for someone to take notice. It was purely personal, and it was just some cathartic time-killing device, but at the same time, no one makes music to fall on deaf ears. Everyone making music, for the most part, would love to see that music released. I remember looking at label pages on myspace and making contact sheets and thinking of who would be right for me... I remember uploading my first tracks onto myspace and getting 5 to 10 plays a day was fucking stellar. I remember each time I'd get a new comment to approve, I was the happiest dude alive, hahaha.

Now I've released over 15 things, had numerous side projects and collaborations with friends and people I've respected for years. The name, Pink Priest, stands for something, I guess, and it just confuses me, but freaks me out too. Most the time, I feel the exact same as I did in those first few days... Not entirely sure what people really think of what I'm doing. Not sure if I truly have a following, etc etc. I watch as releases sell out, and I'm like, "what the fuck?! how?!"

I found out that 200 of the 300 copies of Honeysuckle that were pressed are gone. Now, that doesn't mean that much to many people... I'm not on some Itunes hot-seller list, and I don't get over a 1,000 plays on myspace a day; but to me, being that close to selling out of my very first full-length LP record makes me want to jump through a fucking candy-glass window into a pool filled with whipped cream and Reese's Pieces. The fact I EVER EVEN GOT TO FUCKING RELEASE AN ALBUM blows my mind enough, but knowing there's a possibility that album might truly sell out, and then that I might get to release ANOTHER ONE --- fucking stifling.

I never expected any of this, and I'm truly thankful for everything. I'm thankful for everyone who's ever typed one fucking letter in regards to Pink Priest, positive or negative. I'm grateful for every person that's clicked some paypal screen to snag a tape or cd, to everyone who's emailed me, personally, looking for a release. I'm even grateful to the people who downloaded my shit via mediafire and such, because... well, they're my audience too, and I'm stoked on that.

For years, I never thought I'd ever be able to record music on my own... I never thought I was talented enough, and hell, maybe I'm not. Lord knows I can't play any of the instruments in my possession correctly, but that hasn't really ever mattered to me. As long as there's one kid out there who is getting something from my music, I'll take it... That makes me happier than anything, regarding this whole music thing.

As long as I can continue to prosper within this realm, and as long as people seem to want to take part in this ride, I'll keep doing it; in some way or another.

What's the word?

Pink Priest has a few tapes and things coming up in the near-future. Peasant Magik has And I Watched The Ivy Cover You House listed on their site, but you can't order it right this second, but I'm assuming it should be out really soon. In the world of Pink Priest, it's one of my favorite tapes and I'm extremely psyched to see it come out.

I'll be releasing a third tape on Digitalis Ltd in the future too, entitled Milk For Sisters. The tracks were initially lined up for an LP, but due to timing and things, it will be a tape instead. I'm stoked on it, and excited to see the songs finally released. No idea on a time frame for that, but it shouldn't be too far into the future.

I recorded a lot of raw material for a 7" through Intercoastal Artists. The label is run by Kip from Cloudland Canyon, who also recorded the material for the 7" in his space in Memphis. It also marked the first time I recorded Pink Priest material outside of my home, as well as with an accomplice, my friend Andrew, who I have been in a few projects with in the past. Not sure when that'll be out... There's still a lot of editing and mixing and things to take care of, but perhaps it will see the light of day at some point remotely soon.

There's still the split with A Grave With No Name lined up, but no idea when it will be finished or come out. Whenever it drops though, it will be awesome... Can't wait...

Finally, there's the 2nd volume of the Hexes remix compilation. I've already received 4 edits and I've very stoked on the way things are going. Not sure when I'll get the rest or if there will be a 3rd volume. Only time will tell...

However, these last few Pink Priest releases, whenever they come out, will be the last few Priest items for a while. I won't say I'm taking a hiatus, but I am going to focus on other projects... Mostly, I'll be focusing on my new project Malibu Wands. Recording Raw Dagger, I got really excited for the possibilities of the project. I'll be working on other stuff too, like Gremlynz, Tough Times (yes, I'm going to get my shit together on this... I've been slacking far too long), as well as Wild Safari and Sorority Row if we can work everything out. I'm also hoping to strike up a couple more collaborative projects. So no, I'm not abandoning the Priest project, just spending more time with other avenues. As Pink Priest, I released a ton of stuff in 2009 alone, and I'd like to let the rest of the work I have lined up trickle out, and avoid some sort of overload.

The first legitimate MALIBU WANDS release has dropped via Dial Square Tapes. Malibu Wands is another project of mine that, this time, strips away all elements of beauty. This is dark, disgusting, dank swamp-cellar music. Nihilistic spasms in a dirty bed. Slime hits you on the nose as it drips from motel ceiling.

The next Malibu Wands tape will be dropping in the next couple weeks (maybe sooner?) from Bathetic... It's a more fully realized, slightly different beast with a tweaked approach, but essentially it's still a brutal gnar sesh, just a bit more planned out with minor diversity. If that even makes sense.

I got a box today from Brian at Different Lands.

In the box was several copies of the Gremlynz / Future Twin 2xCS split... It's VERY rad. It looks and sounds great.

So yeah, it's divided into 2 tapes... The Gremlynz tape is pure sub-aquatic doom drone, this shit is decaying, self-destructing, putting real intense pressure on your chest, trying to pulverize your lungs and heart.

The Future Twin tape is a beaut. It's gorgeous, atmosphere layers, dripping shimmering gold liquid into your eye sockets. Something makes these two projects work.

Listening to this tape makes me want to keep the Gremlynz project alive, and makes it obvious (to me) what purpose this project serves.

I'm looking out my bedroom window... The temperature outside is nice. The past few days it's been too hot for my blood, but the atmosphere outside is mellow, comfortable. The smell of honeysuckles has been blowing into my room since I came home. I'm in heaven.

Here's some news.

Bathetic will be reissuing the Dark As Night 4-way split compilation featuring Sleep Over, oOoOO, Survive, and Terminal Twilight. The 2nd edition will be slightly different. It's going to be rad. This will be available in a few weeks probably, if not sooner. We were psyched to release the original version, and the limited availability was a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it felt very special... However, it was a pain in the ass / brain to keep seeing people bumming out about not getting a copy. That's the case with extremely limited releases like that. Basically, we're doing a 2nd run of them in order to a.) get this into the hands of the people that missed out and b.) give the bands themselves more copies. So, yeah, like I said this new 2nd run will be available soon... Just keep checking the Bathetic site @ www.batheticrecords.com or just go there and sign up for the mailing list.

Aside from that... Bathetic has a some realllllllllly killer shit in the works. We don't want to drop all the details yet, because things are still coming together in the stew. We'll release more information as it comes and feels right... Basically, though, if you think anything we've done in the past has been rad, you'll be really into the next few things coming up. It's time to step up in the world.
